Monographic: Sodium Benzoate

Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and it's presented as a hygroscopic crystalline powder or white granules. It is a product soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol.


Sodium benzoate can be technical grade or USP grade.


Sodium benzoate USP grade corresponds to the food additive E211, used in the food industry for its ability to efficiently control and kill fungi, most bacteria and yeasts.


Mainly used in combination with other preservatives, it is used in drinks with and without gas, in concentrates to prepare drinks, sauces, jams and other preserves.


On the other hand, sodium benzoate is also found in alcohol-based rinses and in certain cosmetics and personal care products.
