Dietilenglicol

Monographic: Diethylene glycol

Diethylene glycol is presented as a viscous, colorless and odorless liquid, which is miscible in water and hygroscopic. Despite not being a corrosive substance, diethylene glycol is combustible.

Its main physical parameters are the following:

  • Boiling point: 245ºC
  • Melting point: -6'5ºC
  • Relative density (water = 1): 1.12
  • Relative vapor density (air = 1): 3.7
  • Flash point: 124ºC
  • Autoignition temperature: 229ºC
  • Explosive limits (% by volume in the air): 1.6 - 10.8

Among its uses and applications, the following stand out:

  • It is used in the manufacture of resins
  • It is used in pigments and dyes
  • Used as an additive for lubricants, antifreeze and brake fluids
  • Consumed in additives for textiles, agrochemicals and biocides

Considering chemical risks, it is important to know that diethylene glycol is a product that reacts violently with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazards.

In handling and storage, the following conditions must be taken into account in order to proceed properly:

  • To ensure safe handling of heptane it is important to use appropriate personal protective equipment to avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
  • To ensure safe storage, keep the product in an approved area, fresh, dry and well ventilated, separated from strong oxidants.
