Estireno Monómero Brugués

Monogràfic: Styrene Monomer

The styrene monomer is an aromatic hydrocarbon presented as a slightly yellowish oily liquid, which formula is C8H8.

It is also called ethenylbenzene, phenylethylene or vinylbenzene.

The styrene monomer is obtained from the contact of aluminum chloride with ethylene and benzene, ethylbenzene originating. Then, the ethylbenzene is catalytically dehydrogenated and origins the styrene.

Although it is soluble in alcohols, ethers and carbon disulfide, isn't with water. The main physical parameters of styrene monomer are:

  • Molecular weight: 104.15
  • Boiling point: 145 ºC
  • Flash point: 31.1 ° C
  • Melting point: -31 ºC
  • Density at 20 °C: 0.906 g/cm3
  • Ignition temperature: 490 ºC
  • Explosive Limits (% by volume in air): 1.1 to 6.1%

At the industry level, styrene monomer is used in the production of plastics, paints, synthetic rubbers, resins and coatings. It is widely used for making any insulation material as well as pipes, automobile components and food packaging.

Styrene monomer is used in the production of plastics, paints, synthetic rubbers, resins and coatings.

Styrene monomer is a flammable, toxic and highly reactive monomer, which can polymerize violently. Therefore, as it can explode with air at low concentrations, the following advices must be taken into account to proceed properly in its handling and storage:

  • Is important to protect the skin and eyes with suitable protective equipment to ensure a safety handling of styrene monomer.

  • In order to ensure a safety storage, it is important to keep the product in a properly sealed and labeled container. It must be stored in stainless steel or zinc silicate containers, which must be located in a cool, ventilated area away from sources of ignition, avoiding temperatures above 25°C, and away from combustible materials.
